Alexandra is a qualified ARB registered Architect based in South-West London. ANA Studio was founded in 2019 and has a particular interest in and a knowledge of repurposing existing buildings from small scale residential extensions to large-scale mixed-use schemes.
Alexandra’s earlier career was at the award-winning practices WilkinsonEyre and GMW Architects (now Scott Brownrigg). Previous projects cover a number of sectors, including: Battersea Power Station and Bank Tube Station. For many of these projects, she was based on site gaining a hands-on approach to design, coordination and construction.
ANA Studio has a holistic approach to sustainability, from the materials chosen to the creation of spaces that are appropriate now and for the future. This is especially important in residential projects where the spaces need to work for a number of users throughout the lifetime of the home.
As an Architect, I believe the success of design comes from making the functional beautiful. We achieve this through clever design whilst adding the Client’s personal style through colours and materials. Clients can often overlook small spaces, but I think these are the most important as they can be highly optimised. I enjoy using honest materials and understanding the craftmanship behind them. Having one or two stand out materials in a room can really transform a space, for example: exposed steelwork, exposed brickwork and polished concrete kitchen surfaces to name a few.
Whether it's sitting in a meeting room or around the Client’s kitchen table, I always try to understand how they want to use their home or space. Understanding the initial brief is crucial to optimise the layout to the Client’s individual requirements. There is no one-design-fits-all and I enjoy pushing beyond the Client's initial ideas. I am able to advise and guide from the initial ideas, relevant planning and building permissions, choosing the builder, creating the construction drawings through to project completion ensuring a high-quality end result.
I think repurposing existing buildings to make them suitable to current and future needs is one of the challenges of our generation, especially as we aim to reduce carbon emissions and create zero carbon homes. By complimenting the existing with new materials and designs more appropriate to today's uses we can create spaces that are more appropriate for the future. I am excited to work on any project whether this is increasing the efficiency of a home or using new technologies and materials.
Earlier in my career I worked on a variety of projects, ranging from designing a waterpark in China to residential extensions. I spent two years working on Battersea Power Station where I was responsible for the retail environment. This was a hugely complex project where we aimed to balance the historical conservation of a London landmark whilst juxtaposing it with modern expanses of glass and exposed structure to create a truly unique destination.
I am currently working on a number of residential extensions in London including: a badly-damaged end of terrace house, a listed cottage, a new-build development as well as a feasibility study for a Youth Club large-scale mixed-use scheme. Projects vary in scale and I am always interested to hear about potential ideas.
